A chara, – Ireland’s vote against a proposed European Commission restriction on neonicotinoid pesticides on March 15th is a prime example of how our elected representatives put commercial gain above our collective wellbeing.
Industry-sponsored science on neonicotinoids has been shown to be flawed. In January, the European Food Safety Authority stated that neonicotinoids pose an unacceptably high risk to bees. Numerous scientific studies have shown their adverse effects on bees who are of critical importance to fertilising global food crops.
A loss of bees will have significantly more far-reaching consequences than any restriction of these deadly pesticides could ever have. Only the manufacturers and those who like to keep their rich friends in the pesticides industry happy seek to gain from Ireland’s vote.
Globally, we are all at risk if our Government does not act to protect our bees. – Is mise,
