IRENE REDMOND,
Madam, - As a Christian first and foremost, and as a Catholic (à la Hans Kung), I was very interested in E. Brennan's letter of November 11th in which he appeals to you to show some fair play for the Catholic Church by ceasing to support "bigots" in your letter page and in articles.
I agree with him in principle that we should have fair play for all Churches. However, I object to his use of the word "bigot"; surely one man's "bigot" is another man's "dissenter".
The banning of dissent is what got the "Roman" Catholic Church into the crisis it is in at present. As an optimistic ecumenist I believe this crises could be seen as a "learning curve".
I have faith in the ability of The Irish Times to provide the laity of all churches (and even honest atheists) with a forum in which to talk to one another in search of the truth! - Yours, etc.,
IRENE REDMOND, Granville Road, Dunlaoghaire, Co Dublin.
