Sir, - I usually much enjoy reading Brendan McWilliams's column "Weather Eye", but on May 13th I was both surprised and offended that he described Exeter as "far from anywhere resembling civilisation as most city people know it".

My late mother was from Exeter, and I can assure you that it is a vibrant cultural centre. It is a university city with an active theatrical tradition, a cathedral whose architecture is renowned, and museums to rival our own. Perhaps this cultural tradition was partially instrumental in deciding the British Met Office to move there!

I have maintained my connections with Exeter, although I no longer have any family left there, and am very proud of my Devonian ancestry. - Yours, etc.,

M.F. ARNOULD,
