Fair treatment for teetotallers

Madam, - I am perplexed at the way those who do not drink alcohol are treated at functions and weddings. At a recent dinner we were offered red or white wine and when I asked if there was a non-alcoholic option I was told I could have water, which was in jugs on the table, or I could buy a drink from the bar.

The tickets to this function were quite pricey with, presumably, the cost of the wine included. Why are those who do not or may not drink alcohol treated with such disdain and insulted by being denied a non-intoxicating drink while paying for wine for others? Had I asked for a vegetarian option I'm sure my request would have been granted without fuss or extra cost. - Yours, etc,
