A chara, – Dr Brian Tobin (March 3rd) tells us we don't need to worry that due care isn't being given to the Family and Relationships Bill as he and a number of other distinguished individuals shared their expert opinions "during a lengthy consultation" with an Oireachtas committee one day almost a year ago.
I guess that should be enough to satisfy even the most serious doubts.
And yet, if the flap over the Irish-language version of the amendment to allow for same-sex marriage shows us anything, it is how difficult it can be, even with many months of planning, to construct legislation that is clear, unambiguous, and free from the potential for unintended consequences. And if it is a struggle to do so with a single sentence, clearly it is vastly more so with an entire Bill.
It stands to reason, therefore, that rushing this Bill thorough is likely to result in legislation that is riddled with failings. If this Government actually cares anything for the possible unexpected effects this Bill could have, it should slow down and give it the time needed to make it as error free as it can. Why would it not? Haven’t we been assured there’s no hidden agenda in bringing forward this legislation at this time? – Is mise,
