Sir, - Once again, it seems appropriate to cite the example of how farmers and hill walkers in Co Wicklow seem better able to reach consensus on how potential conflicts between them might be managed for the good of all. The letter from David Herman of Keep Ireland Open (June 11th), indicates a very different climate on "the western seaboard". He details specific and apparently escalating grievances between Keep Ireland Open and the IFA.
Wicklow Uplands Council comprises nominees of 30 groups, including the two organisations just mentioned and represents the varied interests of people who live in the Wicklow uplands, own property there, work there and use the area for recreation. We offer a forum where all voices are heard and all interests enjoy parity of esteem. Thus, potential disputes are headed off and live conflicts are mediated. All issues are resolved by consensus. A vote has never been taken.
The council has a letter on file from Wicklow County Executive IFA, praising the combined effort of Uplands Council members, including Keep Ireland Open and the Mountaineering Council of Ireland, for their "tireless efforts" on behalf of farmers during the recent foot-and-mouth crisis.
Perhaps this model could be tried and tested in Mr Herman's bailiwick. - Yours, etc.,
Dermot J. Hand, Chair, Wicklow Uplands Council, Rathdrum, Co Wicklow.
