Farmers and hill-walkers

Madam, - John Fagan (May 2nd) is entitled to chronicle his woes and his difficulties as a farmer in present times. But I believe that it is unjust of him to blame hill-walkers for his problems.

In my experience hill-walkers are generally responsible people who know and implement the Countryside Code. They appreciate the privilege of access given by landowners.

I am saddened that Mr Fagan shows no appreciation for the support given to Irish farmers by the people of Ireland, including hill-walkers, during the foot-and-mouth crisis.- Yours etc.,
