FEMINISM AND ABORTION

IVANA BACIK,

IVANA BACIK,

Sir, - First a "moderately well-known feminist", then a "strident" one! I am delighted to know that Mary Stewart (June 24th) was able to identify me from John Waters's column of June 17th. She is wrong, however, to say that I am engaged in the "promotion of abortion". I do not believe anyone has the right to promote any course of action for a woman with a crisis pregnancy; women should have the right to choose.

The concept of choice is central to feminism, and I am proud to be a feminist, and to have a record of campaigning for choice and for equality. It is vital that more feminists become active in politics to counter the strident attacks mounted by people like Ms Stewart and Mr Waters. We should not be deflected in the campaign for an equal society, in which more choices are open to all. - Yours, etc.,
