Madam, – As a so-called civilised society, surely the whole point of our taxation system should be that it is fair, equitable and targeted at the people who are in a position to pay.
In this context, does the ESRI (Business This Week, November 12th) not realise that a property tax will simply add to the burden of this generation of young Irish, thousands of whom are already lumbered with a debt which will follow them for the rest of their lives? For all of those saddled with hundreds of thousands in debt, along with the prospect of more tax to come, emigration is no longer even an option.
Perhaps this is the Government’s way to stop the brain-drain? – Yours, etc,
Madam, – When the Government calculates who should pay the property tax, and how much they should pay, could I suggest that the beneficial owners of the property pay in relation to the proportion of the property they own?
In my case, the nice people at Bank of Ireland can pay the whole thing. – Yours, etc,
