Madam, – The past week was one of the most tragic in Ireland’s recent history: two communities have been left devastated after the violent deaths of one man, two women and four children. While the thoughts, prayers and media coverage of the nation was focused on the effect of a bank bailout, a mother was left to bury her two daughters, Zoe (6), and Ella (2).
This tragedy, instead of putting our financial woes into context, has been all but forgotten in the media frenzy surrounding the arrival of IMF and ECB representatives.
This is indicative of what Ireland has become during and after the boom years, a country motivated by money and greed. The apparent moral bankruptcy of this country is more troubling than its financial equivalent. – Yours, etc,
