Sir, – A letter from Mary Stack of Tralee (July 2nd) concerning Ireland’s caminos deserves attention.
There is a "no-fail" Irish camino route that was the subject of a six-part documentary on TG4 between 2003 and 2006 called An tSlí Mór, about the old pilgrimage route from Dublin to Clonmacnoise, via Kildare and Offaly.
A book, An tSlí Mórby Hermann Geissel with maps and extensive detail was published in 2006 by CRS Publications with research by noted historian Seamus Cullen. The route follows the geological formation called Esker Riada.
This route – the Irish Camino – can and should be developed (with EU funding) like the Spanish Camino. This pilgrimage route has tremendous international tourist potential.
