Madam, – As the exchequer is in need of finance, and ideas, perhaps sources which already exist but are not being utilised fully might be tapped into. I refer to driving offences. To clamp down on even two offences which happen on a very wide scale would, I am sure, raise a substantial amount of revenue while also improving traffic flow, reducing danger on the road and the stress caused to those aware of the laws by those either blatantly disregarding the law or are unaware.
The two offences are driving to the right of a bus lane outside of the period when it is designated as such, resulting in a €60 fine under the offence of failure to drive on the left hand side of the road; and, depending on which offence one is fined under, €60/€80 for blocking junctions by stopping in yellow junction boxes. This might help to gauge the true extent of adult illiteracy in Ireland as I am sure there must be some who cannot read the signs which are posted with regard to bus lanes. – Yours, etc,
