Sir, - We have voted Fine Gael for over 30 years but this cannot continue if the Noonan-Mitchell axis prevails. The proposed policy on Northern Ireland would simply imitate Fianna Fail and completely isolate the unionists, or in stark words, the Protestants.
Fianna Fail has endorsed Sinn Fein, and by implication the IRA, as the means to a united Ireland. Noonan says he wants an affinity with the SDLP, but the SDLP has promoted and sustained Sinn Fein. Where would that affinity take Fine Gael?
How can Ireland be united if all the nationalists parties mass themselves behind the terrorists?
Bruton is unique in today's Irish politics. He was the only party leader one could look up to, and we may all suffer because of his demise. - Yours, etc.
