Madam, - Fine Gael's decision to launch negative, personalised poster campaigns targeting Government Ministers does more damage to itself than to the Ministers it is attacking.

Why are Fine Gael strategists adopting such negative and personal tactics? Have they nothing positive to say, nothing constructive to offer? Have they so little confidence in their own leader that they are reduced to attacking other party leaders?

It seems to me that they resort to this type of destructive politics because in their hearts they know they lack the substance and the courage to govern. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Picture the scene. A smoke-filled room in the wee small hours. The members of the "Let's Make Enda More Electable" committee are out on their feet. Then it happens. Our hero, who modestly prefers to remain anonymous, jumps to his feet shouting: "Eureka! I've got it. Let's get John Deasy to issue a statement to the effect that if Fine Gael don't win the next election he'll challenge Enda for the leadership. Then we can sit back and watch the votes roll in."

Clever! A dastardly Fine Gael plot, but clever. - Yours, etc,
