A chara, - David Carroll's rant of October 22nd was ludicrous. Even senior members of the Provisional movement would not describe Garret FitzGerald as a "closet Unionist". Garret's mother was a native of the North and a strong Republican who disagreed with his father's pro-Treaty stance.
This helps explain Dr FitzGerald's long and extensive interest in Northern affairs. He showed a unique understanding of the difficulties faced by all sides in the Troubles. The comfort zones and the certainties of the bigot were never for him.
