Madam, – The current situation no longer concerns me as our country has fallen further than we can comprehend and our immediate future is now out of our hands. We will all suffer to some extent or another, no matter what.
What does concern me is accountability (or the lack of it). We can never move forward until we recognise the mistakes and failures of this system and those guilty of corruption and incompetence are punished. If we do not, history will repeat itself. As Fintan O’Toole quite rightly said (Home News, November 29th), “We are willing to make a sacrifice, but are not willing to be the sacrifice”.
To that end I suggest we insist, before the next election, that our TDs take at least a 50 per cent cut in their salaries, expenses and pension entitlements. While this will only save the taxpayer millions and is insignificant to the billions we now owe, it will certainly ease our pain. We are after all, their employers and can achieve this if we stand together as one and insist they sign up to this before the next election. If we do not,“Tweedle Dee” will do the very same as “Tweedle Dum” has got away with. - Yours, etc,
