Sir, - Many drivers are using fog-lamps on their vehicles even when they are quite unnecessary. This causes dazzle and irritates drivers who know better.
A manual published by the Institute of Advanced Motorists clearly states that fog-lamps should be used only when visibility is reduced to 100 metres or less. The same manual points out that the needless use of fog-lamps renders a driver liable to prosecution.
I would like to appeal to people and organisations with a voice that the public can hear, such as the AA, the Garda, RTE or the National Safety Council, to speak up with a view to having this dangerous practice stopped. We have enough hazards on our roads without manufacturing more. - Yours, etc.,
Douglas McCowen, Templeville Road, Dublin 6W.
