Madam, - I despair at Paul Griffin's letter, "Follow me up to Ceatharlach" (June 15th). Mr Griffin opines that "Some hapless American tourist in a hired car. . . is going round and round Carlow Town."
To assume that foreign visitors are "hapless" is hardly fair. To remove "Ceathlarlach" from road signs to "help" tourists is both disrespectful to Irish culture and patronising to tourists. Visitors may actually find Ireland's bilingual culture appealing.
The country does not exist for American tourists, hapless or otherwise. Ireland is not (yet) a Disney theme park - and not just for foreign visitors. - Yours, etc,
CHRIS EVANS, Brentwood, Essex, England.
