Sir, – Further to your article regarding the wasteful issuing of paper payslips by government departments (“Paper payslips cost State €2.2m”, Home News, November 8th) I wondered if you were aware of similar wastage taking place throughout Revenue departments.
I run a small accountancy business.
Almost 100 per cent of my filing with Revenue is done online. Nonetheless, I receive paper copies of all forms relating to my clients. These must be printed, enveloped and posted, with all the attendant costs. Then I have to dispose of them, again with attendant costs.
Multiply the costs by the number of accountants in the country, along with the number of taxpayers who file their own returns, and you surely have a wasted sum which puts the payslip issue in the shade.
I have written to a number of ministers about this, but always without response.
Does no one actually care about this apparently wilful, and certainly woeful waste? – Yours, etc,
