Foreign languages and education

Sir, – In August 2014, former minister for education Jan O’Sullivan initiated a consultation phase on the theme of “Foreign Languages in Irish Education”. This strategy was supposed to be published in 2015. On the department’s website, nearly 80 submissions from primary, post-primary, third-level education, cultural institutes, enterprise and organisations like ours are accessible. However, almost two years on, no coherent strategy has emerged.

After Brexit, where questions have been raised over the status of English in the EU, it is now a matter of urgency to introduce a plan to foster and develop modern and migrant languages in Ireland. – Yours, etc,
