Sir, - I approved of John Waters's (October 23rd) citing reasons why Charlie Haughey should be forgiven. Mr Waters should be congratulated for consistently stating, with eloquent passion, unpalatable and often deeply uncomfortable truths. But let's get real - Irish societal response is now predicated on such monumental hypocrisy that it is much easier to bang on about the mote in the other's eye.
From lime-throwing at C.S. Parnell to coin-throwing at C.J. Haughey, the immature gesture is a sine qua non of politics for the Irish people. - Yours, etc.,
