Sir, - The Irish Times is the only quality newspaper in the whole of Ireland, and an excellent, trailblazing paper in many ways. I buy it every day and would hate to be without it. I find it disappointing, therefore, that low standards of writing and sub-editing are evident in every issue (the sports pages are particularly bad). In your edition of May 6th I found it difficult to get past the first four sentences of the "Disintegrating traffic plans" leader, which contained two howlers: "forego" (to go before) used instead of "forgo" (to go without); and the common misspelling of "millennium" as "millenium".

I accept that your staff must work under pressure to tight deadlines, and that many of your readers won't notice errors such as those mentioned above. Neither of these facts, in my opinion, excuses the errors. - Yours, etc., Brendan O'Brien, roofhouse, Ballinteer, Dublin 16.
