Sir, - "Enough religion to make us hate"; Victor Griffin borrows the title of his Reflections on Religion and Politics from Jonathan Swift, his illustrious predecessor as Dean of St Patrick's. And he puts paid to the idea of "one, true, authentic Irish tribe".

Indeed there are several such - each as "mongrel", "mixed up", and, oh yes, "authentic" as the next. Personally, I regard this as something to be proud of - and, I suspect, so does the author. Indeed his "Reflections", which cover a multitude of our sins, also make us realise the marvellous positive potential of our varied Irishness - racial, cultural and religious - had we the wit to see it. - Yours, etc.,
