Frank Aiken and Fianna Fáil

A chara, – Further to reading Miriam Lord's article "Freshers get the Willies in FF puzzle" (September 26th), members of the Aiken family were bemused by the assertion that Louthwoman and Fianna Fáil candidate Emma Coffey is a "granddaughter of former tánaiste Frank Aiken, one of the founding fathers of Fianna Fáil".

Although we send Ms Coffey our best wishes in her campaign, as far as we are aware, there is no familial connection between the Aiken and Coffey families. Indeed, as highlighted in an article by Dr Stephen Kelly, “The Haughey factor – why Frank Aiken really retired from party politics” (June 24th), Aiken withdrew from politics and Fianna Fáil in 1973, sparked by a distrust of the political influence of Charles Haughey, and never again attended a Fianna Fáil event during the last 10 years of his life. – Is mise,
