Sir, - I was delighted to read of the suggestion that Ireland should encourage tourism with free flights. If implemented, this proposal would make an excellent basis for an EU-wide Common Tourism Policy.
Tourism is, if anything, even more prone to supply and demand swings than agriculture. After free flights the next logical step would be support pricing for the hotel business. Once demand dropped below a certain level, the EU could avert disaster by sending people to stay in the hotels so that they could maintain a profitable level of occupancy.
The obvious people to send would be all the farmers who are being paid not to farm via the CAP. - Yours, etc.,
