Madam, - I am extremely concerned about the proposed/speculated loss of air services between Cork and London (Gatwick) and Stansted and also speculation re cancelling an Aer Lingus service to London Heathrow from Cork.
This is a worrying situation with huge economic repercussions for the area.
As the London routes yield some 65 per cent of Cork's passenger throughput, then the consequences can be seen in a clearer light.
The whole uncertainty regarding Cork Airport has to stop. Losing core and vital routes is just not on.
The Minister, Martin Cullen, needs to be reminded that the buck stops with him.
The commitment to clear the airport's capital debt goes back to his predecessor and commitments made during the passage of the State Airports Bill.
If the Government is serious about spatial development and equity in the regions, an early and decisive decision has to be made to put Cork Airport on a strong footing now.
Proof of the Government's bona fides to deliver this long-standing commitment is now required. - Yours, etc,
JOHN B HOSFORD, Cappa, Enniskeane, Co Cork.
