Madam, - With reference to Seán MacConnell's article, (July 15th) where he quotes the recent IFA Organisational Review as stating that Macra na Feirme's "role has reduced and Macra's contribution as a feeder of young farmers into IFA has declined", can I point out that the review in question was of IFA and not Macra na Feirme and it is regrettable that it contains disparaging remarks about our organisation.

While there are undoubtedly fewer young farmers going to IFA from Macra, the reason for this is simple - there are fewer young farmers in Ireland, full stop.

The reasons why some young farmers choose not to participate in IFA must be addressed by IFA.

Finally, Macra na Feirme's role has not reduced.

Macra is not simply "an assembly line" for IFA, as suggested in the report. Perhaps the real issue is that our role is becoming more important every day as an alternative and articulate voice for progressive young farmers.

We will continue to represent young farmers as well as providing leadership training, travel opportunities and a social outlet for young farmers and for all rural young people. - Yours, etc.,

THOMAS HONNER,

National President,

Macra na Feirme,
