A Chara, - The determination of the GPA to change the ways of the GAA is to be welcomed. For too long the Croke Park hierarchy has been perceived as power-hungry, bigoted and greedy. The official organisation has a woeful record when it comes to the sharing of facilities, the allocation of tickets for big matches or, as in this case, the treatment of some of its members. They are chronically unreceptive to change.
Our national sports belong to the nation and have a wonderful tradition and history which have evolved with the State. There is no reason why a few GAA politicians who have exclusive access to the helm should be allowed to consistently stall progress with ultra conservative attitudes.
The deal struck by the GPA and the Marlborough recruitment agency represents a breakthrough in this respect. For the first time, the players will get the exposure, publicity and remuneration they undoubtedly deserve. It is also heartening to see them take an active role in changing the organisation, albeit by unorthodox methods. Ironically, this will also serve the GAA by raising the profile of the players and the game and perhaps inspire younger athletes to pursue Gaelic Games rather then other sports.
The courage displayed by the GPA is to be welcomed. - Is mise.
