Sir, - I am not a driver but recently I became aware of a serious failure on the part of the gardai to provide a service to conscientious drivers.
A French friend who lives in Germany wanted to have himself breathalised after a night of celebrating his nation's win in the World Cup. He went to Pearse Street Garda station in Dublin and asked if they could check his blood alcohol level only to be told that this service is only provided at Garda checkpoints or after an accident. He was amazed as it is a service that he avails of regularly in Germany. I am of the opinion that the gardai could learn from their continental cousins and implement a much-needed accident prevention measure rather than waiting until it is too late. - Yours, etc., John Moran,
Windmill Lane,
Dublin 2.
