Madam, - I wish to clarify recent misleading reports regarding Dublin City Council's garden waste depot, which has been operating for 12 years in Raheny.
The depot is not and never was part of St Anne's Public Park. It is located in a 12-acre depot site in the grounds of St Anne's Park and just two of the 12 acres were used as a green waste composting facility until 2003, when composting of green/garden waste at this depot ceased.
The City Council has scaled down the garden waste facility even further to a collection area where householders can still bring garden waste to be shredded and packed before being sent off site for composting. A licence is being sought from the Environmental Protection Agency and the approval of An Bord Pleanála is also required so that householders will be able to continue bringing their garden waste for recycling.
Dublin City Council is now recycling 20 per cent of waste (or 40,000 tonnes) through 126,000 household green bins, 100 glass banks, a network of 11 bring centres and two large recycling centres. - Yours, etc.,
M. TWOMEY, Assistant City Manager, Civic Offices, Dublin 8.
