Gas goes green

Sir, – Richard More-O'Ferrall can tell his friend (Letters, January 3rd) that the EU plans to classify certain gas and nuclear projects as qualifying for green investment status will not impact how carbon taxes will apply to them. The gas that Ireland is becoming reliant on to "support" renewables is still a high carbon fuel that attracts high carbon tax, while nuclear – which supplies half of the EU's clean electricity but Ireland continues to ignore – is free of carbon tax as it emits no greenhouse gases.

The need for reliable and affordable clean energy can only be satisfied with one of these fuels, and it isn’t the high-carbon one. – Yours, etc,

DENIS DUFF,
