Madam, - Sean Flynn is guilty of a little oversight in claiming (last week) that November's Teaching Council election will be the State's first gender-balanced one.
On October 8th there will be an equally PC election - of parent and staff representatives to the country's VECs.
Of the two staff representatives to be elected one must be male; of the two parent representatives, one must be female. Of the four to be appointed by the local authority, two must be female, two male; of the councillors to be elected, the representation must reflect the gender-balance of the councils, i.e. the voters' decision of July 9th last.
These are the first VEC direct elections since the foundation of the State. It would be a pity of "the paper of record" did not record that imporant fact. - Yours, etc.,
LARRY McCLUSKEY, Returning Officer, Co Monaghan VEC Elections, Mark Street, Monaghan.
