Sir, – Further to "Red faces in Fine Gael as Bruton not selected to stand for general election" (Front Page, May 1st), the motivation for Fine Gael's support for and adherence to the gender quota must be questioned. At their Dublin Bay North convention this week, it was proposed to select two candidates to run, one of which was to be female. The democratic process therein resulted in Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton not being selected. Fine Gael headquarters will now, non-democratically, add him to the ticket, thus diluting considerably the chances of election of the female candidate. Ah sure, what's the worry? Party funding won't be affected. – Yours, etc,
JOHN LEAHY,
Rathgar,
Dublin 6.
