GENERAL ELECTION 2002

ALISON MOORE,

ALISON MOORE,

Sir, - The election is upon us and candidates and canvassers will be knocking on our doors. I find this a daunting prospect as virtually all will be advising us that their candidate will "give" us something if elected.

I have devised a list of suggestions which, if adopted, might "give" us a more effective legislature and, in the long term, a better society.

Giving a copy of these suggestions to all the candidates who call will give me some considerable pleasure, and them, I hope, some profit. - Yours, etc.,

Sir, - If only the Government and opposition parties had been as efficient in their duties over the last five years as they have been over the last five days in blanketing the country with their election posters, which, surely in this age of multimedia, is superfluous to needs. - Yours etc,

ALISON MOORE, Rocwood, Blackrock, Co Dublin.

A chara, - The treatment of the Irish language by the present Government is reflected in its hamfisted attempt to translate its election slogan.

"Go leor déanta" means "enough done" It is right.

Enough is Enough. - Is Mise,

Sir, - I note in your coverage of the election in Saturday's Irish Times (April 27th) you show a photograph of the Taoiseach being driven from the Hotel Europe in Killarney. In the photograph it appears that neither the Taoiseach nor his companions (driver and rear-seat passenger) are wearing a seat belt. I understood the laws of our State applied to everyone. I hope the next Taoiseach will lead by better example. - Yours etc,

DAVID COLEMAN, Scariff, Co Clare.

Sir, - Delighted to see the commitment to childcare by the main political parties in their election manifestos. The question I have is: What are they to base their budget predictions for childcare on when there is no mention of childcare in Census 2002? - Yours, etc.,

Sir, - So George the pony that so gamely pulled Mary Harney also pulled Bertrie Ahern round Tullamore last year.

A one-horse town? - Yours, etc.,
