Sir, The fiasco of the perpetual recount in Dublin South East tells us it's time to computerise the proportional representation election system.

The computer programme required for this would be complex, but not beyond the realms of possibility. After all, number crunching is what machines are all about.

Of course the uniquely Irish atmosphere of the count would be lost, but we would be spared the indignity of desperate also rans crying foul at every iffy vote.

The tally men would be redundant, but the PR system and democracy itself would be winners. - Yours, etc.,
