GENERAL ELECTION '97

Sir, This year a prominent politician resigned his Cabinet post over the "payments to politicians" scandal. A factor alluded to during this debate was the incompleteness of this gentleman's tax affairs. The General Election returned this paragon of virtue to Dail Eireann with a large majority, thereby allowing him to legislate for this country once more.

In his capacity as a TD this North Tipperary icon is a servant of the State. My dealings with four State departments as company director of Island Ferries necessitates the provision of an up-to-date tax clearance certificate. In general it is acknowledged that eligibility for election to the Dail is open to holders of Irish citizenship irrespective of race, creed, sex or educational standard, but surely anyone whose tax affairs are not in order should be denied the honour to govern. - Yours, etc.,

Director, Island Ferries Teo, Carraroe, Co Galway.
