Sir, - Genetic testing has the capacity to dramatic improve the quality of life of all people. Any perception that the results of these tests could be used to penalise an individual in terms of life insurance would mean that tests will not be taken and the consequent health care benefits would not be realised.
The Government would be remiss in it responsibilities if it failed to act immediately to protect the right to privacy of the individual with special reference to the results of genetic tests. Earlier this year the US Government prohibited insurers from using or requiring genetic tests. The Irish Government has a unique opportunity to dramatically affect the long-term qualify of life of its citizens and take a modicum of control of spiralling health care costs by enacting suitable legislation to ensure that the results of genetic tests are private. - Yours, etc.,
