Sir - I listened recently on the morning Pat Kenny radio show to a bus-driver giving alleged reasons why the centre door on Dublin buses is not opened. I found it quite incredible that such nonsense could be perpetrated by a sensible person. All buses on the Continent routinely open the centre doors as a routine. There is no real problem.
People stand in the way of the doors here because the tradition is that they are not used. If they were used they would soon learn. When the doors (occasionally) are opened the time-saving is immense; the out-flow is quick and does not block the inflow. I have heard all sorts of objections to the use of the doors from drivers; none is convincing, all are specious. I have heard objections from management based on fear of litigation.
Please can we have an end to all this utter nonsense, and let's have a more efficient service. - Yours, etc.,
Roy Johnston, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
