A chara, - Following a recent opinion poll showing Fianna Fáil support soaring above 50 per cent and Fine Gael plunging towards 10 per cent, the Fine Gael leader, Mr Michael Noonan, detects "an emerging view among voters that it was time to get rid of Fianna Fáil" (The Irish Times, January 8th). Amazing - though, with political judgement like that, the poll results are hardly a surprise.

Maybe he could now turn his stunning analytical prowess towards solving the conundrum that on the one hand, he is advocating a coalition with Labour and the Greens, while on the other hand, the Greens will now not coalesce with parties in favour of the Nice Referendum (i.e. Fine Gael and Labour.) An alternative government? Fun times ahead. - Is mise,
