Giving AE the painter his due

Madam, - I am delighted that Oliver Nulty (August 30th) has had the opportunity to set out so clearly the contribution he has made over many years to promote AE's reputation as a painter.

My article in your edition of August 23rd was a shortened version of a longer article which is to be published, with footnotes, in Apollo magazine later this year. In the shortening much had to be omitted, including the substantive acknowledgement of Mr Nulty's contribution.

The focus of the article was on AE and on his first exhibition 100 years ago. I also wanted to draw attention to those paintings of his in public ownership. I am sorry if I offended Mr Nulty by omitting his contribution in more recent years.

Equally, I am sorry if any other galleries feel similarly. In my view there was no place for individual acknowledgements in that article. An enormous number of people have helped me in my research and continue to do so; I owe them all a great debt. It would have been inappropriate to single out any one individual, organisation or privately owned gallery.

It is excellent news that the Oriel Gallery intends to hold an exhibition of AE's paintings on the 70th anniversary of his death. Readers may also be interested to know that the Model Art and Niland Gallery in Sligo has agreed to hold a loan exhibition of AE's paintings in spring 2006.

For there to be two exhibitions in the 70th year following AE's death is a fine outcome indeed! - Yours, etc.,
