Sir, - A recent illness has reminded me sharply of the shortage of blood in Ireland at the moment. While I was waiting for my own transfusion, an old man told me how much distress he had been caused by his own long wait for blood.
In this Lenten season many people will be seeking positive ways to make a sacrifice as they prepare for Easter. Could I suggest that giving blood would be a useful and symbolically appropriate way of fulfilling this desire? - Yours, etc.,
