Sir, - I really must respond to Councillor George Jones' attack on the vigil-keepers of the Glen of the Downs (The Irish Times, April 24th). To compare the permanent and irreparable damage to the Glen which will be caused if the motorway goes ahead and desecrates this woodland with the minor temporary inconvenience being caused by the vigil-keepers is outrageous.
The lack of support from some local people is rather sad. Do they not realise that, but for these dedicated environmentalists with their presence in the glen and their court action, the motorway would be well under way?
I have visited the camp several times recently and know many of the people there. It is highly insulting to call these wonderful people "eco-dossers". They have endured a horrendously wet winter and spring and deserve the wholehearted support of all right-minded people. Who could blame them if they pulled out in disgust?
I have no doubt that they will raise the siege when the battle is won. I hope they stay until then. - Yours, etc.,
Roger Garland,
Butterfield Drive, Dublin 14.
