Sir, - Whilst the arguments continue between Wicklow County Council and the eco-warriors on the proposed widening of the N11 through the Glen of the Downs, the volume of traffic on this road is increasing by the day.
At peak times this road is now virtually at a standstill, with queues of vehicles emitting poisonous fumes into the Glen. At the current rate of progress, it is quite possible that the trees in question will be killed by air pollution long before the road works get underway.
The protesters have made their point, but surely at this stage it would be kinder to the environment to allow work on this road to commence without further delay. The exhaust emissions from a moving vehicle would be a lot lower, and the constant movement of traffic would disperse the fumes more effectively than at present. - Yours, etc.,
Robin D. Heather, Dunbur Lower, Wicklow Town.
