A chara, – In the midst of the furore of bin collection charges being raised and people expecting action to prevent that, the Government really should try to prevent rubbish by banning retailers from smothering so many items in plastic and cardboard.
Bananas do not grow in plastic bags, kiwis do not grow in plastic boxes and nets, and cucumbers do not grow in vacuum sealed covers. We will never eat these plastic wrappers so why put them on the food? Customers do not demand plastic packaging. It is the supermarket chains that demand it. The Government could cause a significant reduction in the amount of rubbish being dumped by banning supermarkets from using excessive packaging. – Is mise,
