Sir, - John Waters has written in his column (March 4th): "We can, for example, understand fully that Mother Teresa is good but have difficulty with Bob Geldof who does the same kind of work (italics mine) but has long hair and uses swear words."

Without prejudice to the latter's Live Aid concert of a decade ago, together with his subsequent promotion of Third World causes and irrespective of what one thinks of Mother Teresa's purpose and style, I would have thought that their curricula vitae were significantly different. I would like to know how John Waters reaches the conclusion that their work is, as he describes it, of the same kind. - Yours, etc.,
