Goodbye, Gorey

Madam, - The Gorey bypass has indeed been finished ahead of time, although some would say it is still 10 years too late. Just down the road is Ferns, and all traffic on the N11 heading for Wexford and the ferryport of Rosslare is still funnelled through the main street of this historic village.

Along this short, narrow stretch are two busy secondary road junctions, a right-angled bend, three pubs, two cafés, the entrances to two new housing estates, two hairdressers, a pharmacy, a filling station, two churches, very many pedestrians, and no pedestrian crossing. After Ferns is Enniscorthy, and as far as can be ascertained there are no plans for a bypass in the forseeable future.

Does the National Roads Authority not do joined-up thinking - or is it the case that, as so often, the allocation of resources to specific areas is dependent on their political clout? - Yours, etc,

EAMONN O'DOHERTY, Ferns, Co Wexford.
