Sir, – I support the views of letter-writer John McEneaney in relation to the massive contribution of family carers to Irish Society (July 8th). That valuable work is now being recognised and this will move forward in the programme for government. Their voices will be heard.
The following is now happening. Expenditure on carers has increased from €877 million in 2015 to €912 million in 2016. The carer support grant was increased to €1,700.
In excess of €900,000 has been provided to 16 groups, including €300,000 to Family Carers Ireland.
I am also working on a new mobility scheme, and the carers’ strategy will be implemented in full.
Despite recent events, we are all at one in our belief that Government is not about having power. It is about using power to bring about change and compassion. The voice of the carer will be heard on all of these matters. – Yours, etc,
FINIAN McGRATH TD,
Minister of State
for Disability Issues,
Dáil Éireann,
Dublin 2.
