Sir, - With reference to Councillor Deirdre de Burca's letter of January 14th, let me state first that I had no hand, act or part in the decisions made by local authorities during their recent discussions on their estimates. Such decisions are entirely a matter for the elected members.
Secondly, Government policy in relation to waste management is clearly, openly and transparently laid out in the document "Changing our Ways". That policy is firmly based on the "polluter pays" principle and the concept of the waste hierarchy - I understood that the Green Party was a strong advocate of both of these principles.
Is this more lip service from the Green Party, or does it genuinely believe in these principles?
Is this another example of the Green Party having one policy in Europe and another when it suits electorally at home? - Yours, etc.,
Noel Dempsey, TD, Minister for the Environment, Custom House, Dublin 1.
