Government’s take from landlords

Sir, – Having read Fiona Reddan’s article (“Landlords to face additional 4 per cent charge in 2014 tax returns”, October 27th) I understand the reluctance to control rents.

Landlords provide houses, maintain them and collect rent, 42 per cent of the rent goes back to the government in tax, 4 per cent in PRSI since 2014 and there’s property tax.

Tax relief on a small portion of the rent was abolished in the last few years.

Best of all, the landlord gets all the blame while the government makes large financial gains.
