Sir, - I wish to respond to the claims made in your editorial (August 31st) regarding the current situation for graduates. I am currently enjoying a "grim and debilitating experience", not unlike that of 1980s graduates, as I seek employment in the scientific sector, having finished college last September.
As those currently employing in this sector require a number of years of experience, it is a mystery to me how a graduate can get his/her career off the ground. It is an employer's market and I wish the media would look into this phenomenon before producing more propaganda about how good life is. Where some in other sectors operate in a very fertile employment climate, opportunities for emerging science graduates in this country seem less abundant. I decided to remain in Ireland to try to embark on a scientific career here but to no apparent avail. I no longer wish to be penalised by a system that has educated me well (to MSc level), yet has no place for me. - Yours, etc.,
K. Martin, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.
